Cold Cuts publishes irregularly and does not follow a fixed format. Each edition takes the shape its material demands, whether that is a newspaper, an artist-led issue, a collective photo journal, or an archival book built over several years. Some bring together many voices, while others stay closely focused on a single history. Together, the editions form an evolving printed record of lives, images, and histories that might otherwise remain scattered or disappear.

Mohamad Abdouni
Foreword by Sabyl Ghoussoub
The issue coincides with the exhibition of the same name, showing at the Institute of Islamic Culture in Paris, as part of “C’est Beyrouth” from March 27th until July 28th, 2019.
The issue chronicles the lives of Doris and her queer son Andrea. Together they challenge the social norms of a patriarchal society and the so-called family values of a Middle Eastern family.

This special edition issue of Cold Cuts is a public archive that compiles personal photographs and bilingual oral histories from ten trans* women that recount their lives through the civil war in Lebanon as well as the years that followed.
Compiled by Mohamad Abdouni and co-edited by Joy Stacey and Rayan Abdel Khalek, It pays tribute to trans* women and femme men who have been largely erased from Beirut’s history, drawing visibility to an extraordinary community that has long been pushed to the shadows.
The women tell the story of a city that is now lost, of war, survival, love, balls, parties, families, beaches, abuse, and jail. The project shows an unprecedented history of queer communities in Beirut, and aims at affording our elders overdue respect, visibility, love and kindness.
This issue was made possible with support from the Arab Image Foundation, Mophradat, Studio Safar, The Norwegian Embassy, Helem and Station.
